The Loft at Cinema La Placita continues its 9th season in July with a continuation of the second annual “Shot in Tucson” film series, a tribute to Sydney Pollack, and a screening of “To Kill a Mockingbird” as part of the Tucson International Children’s Film Festival.

The “Shot in Tucson” series will feature movies which were filmed in part or in whole in the Tucson area. Tucsonans who appeared in or were extras in or worked on these films, or simply stood by to watch all the action during production, are especially invited to see their films on the big screen, in some cases for the first time in decades.
Since April 2000, Cinema La Placita has been showing classic films, outdoors in the lovely plaza setting of La Placita Village. All films begin at 7:30pm each Thursday evening, May through October. Admission for the films is free, although a $3 per person donation is greatly appreciated. All donations contribute directly to the programming of the series.

La Placita Village is located at the southwest corner of Broadway and Church Avenue in downtown Tucson. Ample parking is available in the La Placita Parking Garage located on Stone Avenue just south of Broadway. Chairs are provided, but guests are welcome to bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Restaurants of La Placita Village are available for dining. Alcohol is not permitted in the plaza.

T.Y.L.A. (Turn Your Life Around), Inc.

T.Y.L.A. (Turn Your Life Around), Inc. is a non profit agency designed to help and encourage men and women in sustaining their life in recovery from drugs and alcohol. This agency was create by Cheryl Holland, a local business owner, mother, and addict in recovery, and Karl Holland, a local business owner of 23 years, and owner of Holland Construction.

Our biggest program right now, which was featured in the Arizona Daily Star, is the Adopt-a-Mom mentoring program in which fantastic, sober mothers are paired up with women in need of a role model.

We have a great thrift store with a wide variety of recycled clothing for all ages (and brands such as Gap, Guess, American Eagle, DKNY, Old Navy, Abercrombie, etc.) as well as new items from Le' Cher Clothing Line. We offer free recycled outfits, and various other items to those in need that are referred to us by other agencies. Our thrift store also has dishware, some furniture items, books, and much more

Through our panty program, we donate new panties to women in need.

Through the Angel for Assistance Program, in which we have allotted $225/month or $75/person, we can provide financial assistance to 3 people/month in crisis.

Some of our other services include a support line open 7 days a week until 10pm, GED tutoring, life-skilss classes, and a wellness and activities forum with fun events and discussion (such as bowling, yoga, and discussions on stress, relaxation techniques, and health and nutrition.

Stuff the Bus for TUSD! School Supplies Drive
School supplies drive helps TUSD students start the school year prepared to learn

It may seem like the school year is weeks away, but back-to-school time is rapidly approaching. And this time of year means one thing – time to stock up on school supplies! Unfortunately, not all of the students in our community can afford basic back-to-school essentials such as backpacks, notebooks and binders.

The Tucson Association of REALTORS®, Tucson Unified School District (TUSD), Office Max and Beaudry RV are teaming up to ensure that ALL TUSD students have the supplies they need to get through the school year. To preserve costs, we will be “stuffing” an RV, provided by Beaudry RV. Members of our community will have the opportunity to “Stuff the Bus” throughout July and early August at:

The Desert Speed School

The Desert Speed School is sponsoring a free youth field day and barbeque event on Saturday, July 26th from 7pm-9pm at Udall Park. A silent charity auction will take place to benefit Speed School Charities, which include the Boy's and Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Interfaith Coalition for the Homeless. There will be events and prizes for the kids and food and drink for all.

 

162nd Fighter Wing Softball Committee

The 162nd Fighter Wing Softball Committee was developed to support the moral, welfare and recreational needs of all the members of the 162nd Fighter Wing, in Tucson, Arizona. The Wing Softball Committee is a nonprofit organization and membership is strictly voluntary for those interested in dedicating their time to support this organization.

The 162nd Fighter Wing Softball Committee respectfully requests your support for their 43rd Annual Softball Tournament. The tournament is going to be held at 601st Air Operations Center, Panama City, FL on 5-9 August 2008 and all Air National Guard units are invited to participate. The 162nd Fighter Wing Committee plans on taking 5 teams; Men’s Open, Co-ed, 35 and older, 45 and older and a Woman’s team.

We are asking businesses and organizations to help us make this a successful tournament by making a monetary donation. All proceeds from donations will go towards the 162nd Fighter Wing Softball Committee in support of the 162nd Fighter Wing softball teams participating in this year’s tournament.

On Saturday, September 13th , 2008, the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council will present some of the greatest international Jazz musicians and celebrities of our time in concert LIVE, poolside at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort.

Join us for a spectacular evening with some of the greatest Jazz musicians of our time!

The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council has assembled some of the best talent in over 8 years for the 2008 Jazz Legends benefit concert! Join us for a candlelit poolside evening featuring world famous Jazz musicians and vocalists performing in this one of a kind JAM SESSION event. This compilation of talent has played with some of history’s greatest names such as, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and Ray Charles, just to name a few!

Bobby Floyd (piano), Byron Stripling (trumpet), Butch Miles (drums), Lynn Seaton (bass), Rickey Woodard (saxophone) and Wycliffe Gordon (trombone) will round out this exciting cast of performers. This year’s performance will highlight the musical inspiration of Joe Williams with performances featuring a mixture of blues, ballads, popular songs, and jazz standards.

The evening will include three ticket options for attendees: $25 for Lawn Seating, $65 for poolside reserved seating; $100 poolside reserved seating for the concert with three course dinner and wine, prior to the concert. Concert begins at 6:30pm.

PERFORMER BIOS:

Bobby Floyd, piano

Virtuoso pianist Bobby Floyd is the pianist of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and has performed in the US and Europe with Ray Charles, Rusty Bryant, and Jeff Tyzik. He has toured around the world with artists like Sarah Vaughn and Glen Campbell and is in recording studios regularly.

Rickey Woodard, saxophone

Tenor Star Rickey Woodard has played overseas with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Horace Silver, and for seven years as a member of the Ray Charles band. His robust distinctive style jazz is rooted in the blues. From Hollywood he plays with the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Frank Capp’s Juggernaught, in addition to regular recording and world wide travel to festivals and concerts.

Byron Stripling, trumpet

Byron Stripling, a world class trumpeter and vocalist, played lead trumpet and soloed with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones and Frank Foster. He has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry and Louis Bellson. Bobby has played as a soloist with the Boston Pops and PBS features with John Williams and he is the conductor of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. He plays the trumpet with stunning style and depth and is at home in every generation of jazz with equal ease.

Lynn Seaton, bass

Lynn was a distinguished member of the Woody Herman and Count Basie bands in the 80’s and 90’s and played extensive tours with Tony Bennett, George Shearing, Monty Alexander, and the Jeff Hamilton Trio. He has played on over 100 recordings with the Whose Who of Jazz with Buck Clayton, Al Cohn, “Sweets” Edison, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, and Joe Williams. He is on the faculty of the University of North Texas, the biggest jazz school in the world.

Butch Miles, drums

World famous drummer Butch Miles played for the Count Basie Orchestra for almost 30 years. A veteran of famous bands and orchestras, Butch has played for and with star vocalists, recorded tracks for movies, and played on nearly every continent in concerts and festivals. His credits include playing with Benny Goodman, Lena Horne, Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Dave Brubeck, Clark Terry, and Mel Torme.

Wycliffe Gordon, trombone

Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon is one of the most exciting soloists of his generation. Known as the trombonist/soloist for the Winton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, his career includes performing as both an educator and recording artist. He is a gifted composer and arranger who has appeared on PBS Television as a commentator, guest artist and performer. Gordon spends much of his time travelling the globe recording as a leader as well as a soloist.

The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council
1st annual Oro Valley BBQ, Blues and Classic Car Show family festival on September 20th!

GOVAC presents the 1st Annual Oro Valley Classic Car, BBQ & Blues Show” family festival on Saturday, September 20th at Steam Pump Village on Oro Valley.  This rain or shine event will feature up to 200 of the best classic and antique cars and trucks in Arizona, live music and some of the best BBQ in the West! 

The day will be filled with a mix of classic rock and oldies from DJ John and capped off with a blues concert featuring one of the best blues bands in Southern Arizona, The Bad News Blues (see band bio below)!  Of course, a show like this wouldn’t be complete without great food and beverages so we’re assembling some of the finest BBQ cuisine from our area, plus ice cold beer from Budweiser. Vehicle Registration for the Car Show begins at 7am with the actual show running from 10am – 3pm.  There will be an awards ceremony presenting 1st and 2nd place trophies in eighteen different categories. 

In addition to food, cars and music, we’ll be giving away a big prize as part of a charity “poker walk” to benefit the Arts.  The basic idea behind the poker walk is simple.  Attendees that want to participate will pay $5.00.   As they walk along the classic cars, seven predetermined cars will offer each participating attendee one playing card.  After collecting all seven cards, the attendee with the best 5-card hand out of all that participate will win the grand prize.  A new spin on a popular game!

Steam Pump Village is located on North Oracle in Oro Valley.  From I-10 take Exit 240 and head East on Tangerine Road approximately 14 miles to Oracle Road and turn South (Right).  Steam Pump Village is 5 miles on the right.  From Tucson, take North Oracle to Oro Valley past 1st Avenue.  Steam Pump Village is on left past Home Depot.

Bad News Blues Bio

The Bad News Blues Band has been gaining a reputation for house burning live performances all over the United States as well as Canada, Mexico, Turkey, Romania, Ireland, the U.K. and even Moscow Russia! With their latest ARV Records release, "Still Cadillacin'" produced by Richard Medek and mixed by Teddy Morgan, they're set to hit the road and spread the word with the fire and intensity that their live shows are renowned for worldwide.

In the Thirteen years since the band was formed they have won many local and regional awards including first place in the 1997 and 2002 Arizona Blues Shootout. Winning the shoot out earned them a spot at the International Blues and talent competition in Memphis Tennessee sponsored by the Blues Foundation. The band has the distinct honor of being the first blues band ever to be added to the artist roster for the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.

After touring at length with Texas guitar legend Long John Hunter, The Bad News Blues Band is making a name for themselves with upcoming performances, club dates and festivals across the country.

This band is on the move with a smoking hot rhythm section, sweet smoldering horns, blistering guitar, and an impressive frontline of dynamic vocals, that is sure to Knock You Out!

DJ John bio

DJ John Strobeck has done the Casa De Los Niño’s Show for many years and is a Tucson institution.  You can check him out during a Little Anthony Car Show.  He’s a car nut himself, does the trophy presentations, and has a self contained system that pulls up, plugs in and is ready to go.  DJ John knows the Car Show venues and their participants like the back of his hand.  No car show is complete without DJ John.

A Dynamic Duo is "A pair of people, who, working together, have done something which makes our community a better place to live." A special "Don and June Jorgensen Award” will be given to a duo working in the field of addictions. Nominations are due by 5 PM on July 14, 2008. The nominees will be honored at the 13th Annual Dynamic Duo Awards Gala on September 21, 2008 at the Tucson Convention Center. 1st Annual Ride to Empower
Breast Cancer: Network of Strength Month
to support those who’ve been touched by breast cancer

This October in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Network of Strength is holding its first annual Ride to Empower October 23rd to 26th in Solvang, California. Breast Cancer Network of Strength will be sending a team of riders from Arizona to California for the big event and we want you, your family, friends and co-workers to join the team. The Ride to Empower is a destination bike ride with route lengths ranging from 32 miles to a 100-mile century ride. This incredible four day event gives participants the opportunity to challenge themselves on a long-distance ride and pay tribute to friends and loved ones touched by breast cancer. The event promises to inspire and empower all who attend, providing the perfect way to honor the survivors in your life, commemorate your own diagnosis and remember those who are no longer with us. He is a 2 time USAT All American Honorable Mention winner and has competed for the last 5 years as a sponsored athlete in a variety of endurance races including Ironman, 24 hr adventure races, and the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
